Shopify Thank you page tracking after August 2026

Last reviewed: 11 October 2026.

Short answer

Shopify has replaced the old Thank you and Order status pages. On them, code from checkout.liquid, the Additional scripts box and script tags no longer runs. Shopify Plus stores reached that point on 28 August 2025; for other plans, 26 August 2026 was the deadline, and stores not upgraded by then were upgraded automatically. Purchase tracking now goes through pixels in Settings > Customer events: app pixels from apps such as Google & YouTube or Facebook & Instagram, or custom pixels you add yourself. A tag that lived only in your theme or in Additional scripts may no longer record purchases, and nothing in the admin warns you.

What changed, and when?

DateWhat happensSource
28 August 2025Shopify Plus stores: script tags stop running on the Order status page, and checkout.liquid and additional scripts are sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages. For other plans, the Additional scripts section in the Checkout settings becomes view-only.shopify.dev; Shopify Help Center
January 2026Shopify's Google Tag Manager help page: automatic upgrades began, and customizations using additional scripts, apps with script tags or checkout.liquid on the Thank you and Order status pages are lostShopify Help Center
26 August 2026Upgrade deadline for stores on plans other than Plus. Script tags stop running on the Order status page for all other stores. Stores that were not upgraded by that date were upgraded automatically.Shopify Help Center; shopify.dev

Shopify's upgrade guide says that upgrading "replaces your existing pages and overwrites their current customizations". If you never rebuilt your tracking, the old scripts are simply gone.

What replaced Additional scripts and script tags?

  • Pixels (Customer events) handle tracking. Shopify says they "automatically load on the Storefront, Checkout, Thank you page, and Order status page". App pixels come with an app: the Google & YouTube channel (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads conversions) or the Facebook & Instagram channel (Meta pixel). Shopify recommends an app pixel when one meets your needs. Custom pixels are code you or a developer add, for example a Google Tag Manager setup; they run in a sandbox.
  • Blocks and UI extensions in the checkout and accounts editor replace content that scripts used to show, such as surveys or upsell widgets. For the Order status page, Shopify names customer account UI extensions as the replacement for script tags that render content.
  • Both kinds of pixels use the Web Pixels API and its standard events, such as product_added_to_cart, checkout_started and checkout_completed.

checkout_completed fires "once for each checkout, typically on the Thank you page". With a post-purchase upsell, it fires on the first upsell offer page instead and not again on the Thank you page.

How do I check whether my pixels still count purchases?

1. List the pixels Shopify runs.

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Customer events.
  2. Look at the app pixels and the custom pixels. A custom pixel must show Connected in the Status column. A pixel listed under Disconnected pixels does not run.
  3. For each app pixel, open the More options menu and select View customer privacy to see what consent it needs.

2. Find leftovers in your theme.

Search your theme code (theme.liquid and snippets) for tag IDs such as G-, AW-, GTM- or a Meta pixel ID. A tag only in the theme does not run in checkout; a tag in the theme and in an app pixel may count events twice. Shopify advises removing old code before you connect a new pixel.

3. Test with the Shopify Pixel Helper.

  1. In Settings > Customer events, open the pixel (for an app pixel, the More options menu) and click Test. The Shopify Pixel Helper opens on your store. You can test one pixel at a time.
  2. If it shows Pixel is awaiting consent, accept tracking in your cookie banner or click Give consent to continue test.
  3. Browse, add a product to the cart and start checkout. Check the Events received list: a green dot means the event's callback succeeded, a red dot means an error.
  4. To test the Thank you page, place a test order with Shopify's test payment gateway or Shopify Payments test mode. You are not charged, and test orders don't show in reports or payouts. Customers can't place live orders while your payment provider is in test mode, so do this on a quiet day.

4. Check the ad platform's own status.

In Google Ads, go to Goals > Summary and look at the status of each conversion action. Google lists Active, Needs attention, Misconfigured (recording has stopped because of a setup error or a broken tag), Awaiting conversions (no conversions recorded in the last 7 days) and Removed. Other ad platforms have their own diagnostics.

5. Compare numbers for the same days.

Compare a recent week of Shopify orders with purchases in Google Analytics 4 and conversions in Google Ads or Meta for the same dates. They rarely match exactly, because of consent and because each ad platform decides which orders it attributes to its ads. Look for a break: purchases that fall to zero, or drop sharply from one day while orders do not.

How does customer privacy affect pixels?

In consent-required regions, which Shopify describes as usually the EEA and the UK, "web pixels run only when visitors have provided the permissions required in the pixel configuration". By default, new pixels require Marketing and Analytics permissions. Pixels set as data sale don't run for customers who opted out of data sale or sharing, unless the pixel supports limited data use. Shopify also warns that opt-in consent "might reduce data available for analytics, marketing, and personalization", so fewer recorded purchases after you add a cookie banner do not by themselves mean a pixel is broken.

If a pixel does not fire in a test:

  • Check Settings > Customer privacy for settings that block it.
  • Clear your browser cookies so the cookie banner appears again.
  • If you use a third-party consent app, confirm that it syncs consent to Shopify.
  • If you use a custom domain, Shopify says your customer account domain must be a subdomain of your store domain (for example account.example.com). Otherwise pixels and cookie consent don't work on the new Order status page.

What to check in your store

  • In Settings > Customer events, list every pixel and confirm the custom pixels you rely on show Connected.
  • Search the theme for tag IDs (G-, AW-, GTM-, Meta pixel ID) and remove tags that an app pixel already covers.
  • Use the Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram channels for Google Analytics and the Meta pixel, as Shopify recommends.
  • Rebuild any Order status page content (surveys, upsells, tracking widgets) with blocks or apps in the checkout and accounts editor.
  • Test each pixel with the Shopify Pixel Helper, including a test order for checkout_completed.
  • Check conversion action status in Google Ads (Goals > Summary) and in your other ad platforms.
  • Compare a week of Shopify orders with GA4 and ad platform purchases.
  • Review Settings > Customer privacy, your consent app's sync with Shopify and, with a custom domain, your customer account domain.

How Lektoro helps (and what it doesn't do)

Lektoro: Feed & Pixel Guard is a Shopify app that watches your storefront tracking next to your Merchant Center data.

What it does:

  • Scans storefront pages for tracking tags (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Google Tag Manager, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and others) and separates theme code from app pixels and custom pixels.
  • Flags theme-only tags, tags installed both in the theme and by an app pixel, tags initialised more than once and several GA4 properties.
  • With Pixel heartbeat turned on, adds its own web pixel that counts standard events per hour, up to checkout completed, and alerts you when they drop or stop compared with previous days. It stores only event names and hourly counts and runs only with analytics consent.

What it doesn't do:

  • It cannot read custom pixel code, so it cannot tell which events a custom pixel sends.
  • It does not check whether Google, Meta or other platforms received or attributed a conversion.
  • It does not install, repair or remove other pixels or edit your theme.
  • A new heartbeat needs several days of normal traffic before it can alert.
